British music group EMI said 23 January, 2002 that its US label Virgin Records had dumped US pop diva Mariah Carey for an eight-figure sum, after her latest album flopped and she suffered a nervous breakdown. EMI said in a statement that it had agreed to pay Carey a golden handshake of 28 million USD (32 million euros) to buy its way out of the deal after just one album -- the commercially disappointing "Glitter" -- the soundtrack to the film of the same name starring Carey.
