Icona Pop Talks Heartbreak & Men In Studio With DJ Toro
Swedish electro-pop duo Icona Pop took a break from their heavy touring schedule to stop by the 92.3 NOW studios to discuss their upcoming self-titled album with resident mixer DJ Toro, who shamelessly confessed his love to the ladies.
DJ Toro praised the girls for their Swedish accents, incredible talent and exciting music videos, especially his favorite “We Got The World,” which features some nudity. Somehow this made singer Caroline blush.
Toro also admiringly mentioned that he would be down to be in one of their videos.
“It’s only us two, so you could definitely be in our video,” said Caroline.
The girls met 4 years ago in 2009 through a mutual friend at a dance party while Aino was dealing with a heartbreak and Caroline was facing some woes of her own.
“I know you were heartbroken and I was kind of down, because nothing was working out with the music or my love life so I [threw] a lot of parties at my place. Kind of dancing my pain away a little bit. And then Aino came to one of my parties and it was love at first sight. We felt instantly that we had something special,” said Caroline.
The two immediately connected and have been inseparable ever since. They wasted absolutely no time putting a band together, writing five songs and within a month selling out their first gig. “That’s how we roll” said Caroline.
“Since that day on we’ve been hanging out 24/7. The day after we started to write and we didn’t even talk about influences. We just sat down with a computer and a bottle of wine, of course. And then we wrote a song and we decided on that spot, ‘Yeah okay there is something mental going on here. Let’s just start a band.’ Then two days after that we booked a gig,” said Aino.
Their biggest hit, “I Love It” featuring Charli XCX has received a lot of attention on TV and online and landed them a spot to perform at Santos Party House in Chinatown, NYC for the 2012 CMJ Music Marathon.
“It’s definitely a song about getting out of a really bad [relationship] – like your heart is broken into a thousand pieces and you think that you’re never going to smile again. But it always comes this day when you feel a little bit better, a little bit stronger and you’re angry,” said Caroline.
Then Caroline got really serious.
“You get into the f**k it mode. And you’re thinking about all these different ways to kill that guy. Or hurt them, killing could be very painless for them,” said Caroline.
“Right now we are on this tour and then we are actually finishing up our full length,” said Aino.
