GRAMMY-winning EDM producer Skrillex has started the New Year with a flurry of activity, releasing a new party-themed video for the song “Summit,” a collaboration with ex-girlfriend Ellie Goulding, followed by a three-song EP of new music.
Australian design collection Pilerats is responsible for the “Summit” music video, with the piece juxtaposing slice-of-life images with scenes of Skrillex performing live to craft the engaging clip.
“Two years ago one of our promoter friends asked us if we wanted to put on a party with this unknown dude called Skrillex,” Pilerats said on their website about first connecting with the “Bangarang” producer who was on an Australian tour at the time. “The show was awesome. Oliver Sykes from Bring Me The Horizon happened to be playing a show down the road and hopped on stage to scream over a Skrillex remix of one of their songs – the only time this has ever happened. The 400-person crowd (was) going mental.”
Impressed by a video the collective produced for another artist, Skrillex commissioned them to make one for him.
“Once we got the all clear, we set off and this is what we and seven months of work came out with.”
Just one day after the release of the “Summit” video, Skrillex unexpectedly delivered the new three-track Leaving EP, featuring the reggae-tinged “Scary Bolly Dub” (an expansive remix of fan favorite “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites”) and the quiet, more meditative title cut, which discerning electronic music fans are comparing to mysterious UK producer Burial.
“Here are some songs that I put together for an EP that came together last minute,” Skrillex said of the release in a press statement. “’Scary Bolly Dub’ is a song I’ve been playing in my sets for a while. I use it more as a DJ tool, but I wanted you guys to have it.
“’The Reason’ and ‘Leaving’ came together last minute,” he continued in reference to the other two songs on the EP. “I made ‘Leaving in my hotel room in Mexico and just finished ‘The Reason’ an hour ago in my hotel room in Miami. I guess it’s just kind of a reflection of how I’m feeling right now. Hope you guys enjoy these quality wavs.”
The EP was released through The Nest, a subscription service of Skrillex’s record label, OWSLA, and can be streamed for free via the official Skrillex Youtube page.
