After weeks of competition and dreams being crushed by eliminations, the four semi-finalists faced one of the hardest result shows yet as the last three were determined by America to move on to the final round of The Voice. From Team Blake, Terry McDermott and Cassadee Pope remained while Team Cee Lo had Nicholas David and Trevin Hunte fighting to stay in the competition.
But before the bittersweet results could be revealed, the night featured special duets from each team, plus a homecoming of finalists from past seasons returning to The Voice stage to showcase their new singles.
Terry and Cassadee kicked the night of performances off with a duet on the folk-rock hit “Little Talks” by Of Monsters and Men, who just so happened to be sitting in the crowd watching – no pressure! They tackled the song with ease with their complementary voices and did the band proud.
A homecoming from season two runner-up Juliet Simms heated things up on stage with her new single “Wild Child” and some explosive pyrotechnics. Looks like Juliet isn’t do too shabby these days despite coming in second last season; her advice to the finalists? “Keep calm” as the results roll in.
After a sentimental look back and sharing childhood memories on what first drew them to become singers, it was time for the first round of live results, which sent Terry from team Blake as the first of three finalists.
The little country firecracker that captivated Blake Shelton last season, RaeLynn returned to The Voice stage with her latest single “Boyfriend,” which she co-wrote with two other contestants from last season. She might look sweet and innocent, but ladies, better keep an eye on this angel in disguise, because she has her eye on your boyfriends.
After a brief video confessional with the coaches and contestants choosing who’d they’d pick to be deserted with on an island, a visit from season two’s fourth place finalist, classically trained opera singer Chris Mann, brought the house down with his inspirational ballad “Roads.” Having just performed for President Obama and with two new albums out now, contestants can take it from Chris that coming in fourth place doesn’t mean the end of the road.
An emotional moment from Nicholas on how he’s handling being away from his wife and family, it was time to announce the second finalist moving on, with country rocker Cassadee winning the vote.
With both singers from team Blake on to the finals, it was Nicholas and Trevin left from team Cee Lo with the two teaming up for sentimental final performance together. Their vocals soared on a duet of Mariah Carey’s ballas “Hero” before heading to the final elimination.
And finally, the moment of truth came for the remaining team Cee Lo partners, with Carson announcing the last finalist in the final three being Nicholas, booting Trevin from the competition.
Both amazing artists in their right, Adam Levine said it best before that the elimination “determines nothing for your future” and CeeLo was torn up that one of his own would be sent home saying, “You have my love respect and loyalty going forward. May the best man win.”
Before the results were announced, Trevin had some sweet final words to his coach saying “Thank you for pushing me, motivating me. I love you, CeeLo. I will always love you. I’m just happy to be here.”
