The venerable Soul Train made a stop over the holiday weekend to celebrate music. The event honored the year’s brightest new stars in including Frank Ocean and Miguel, as well acts who rose to fame decades ago, such as New Edition and Aretha Franklin.
While The Soul Train Awards 2012 paid homage to the legacy of soul, R&B and gospel music, fans were treated to a heavy dose of big performances from contemporary artists singing their present day hits, including Miguel (“Adorn”); Keyshia Cole (“Trust and Believe” and “Enough of No Love”); Ne-Yo (“Let Me Love You”); and 2 Chainz (“I’m Different”).
The show jumped off with a medley of soul and R&B hits. Anthony Hamilton ripped through a rendition of Bill Withers’ “Lovely Day”; Leah LaBelle recreated Teena Marie’s “Square Biz” and Fantasia took on Aretha Franklin’s “Don’t Play That Song For Me”; and Charlie Wilson represented for the Gap Band with their classic tune, “Outstanding.”
New Edition, who took home the high honors of Lifetime Achievement Award, hit the stage for a set of their memorable songs including ”Candy Girl,” “Mr. Telephone Man” and “If It Isn’t Love.” Stevie Wonder closed the show with ”Superstition” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours” and was joined onstage by many of the night’s performers.
The Soul Train Awards 2012 was taped earlier this month at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood and was simulcast on BET and Centric Sunday (November 25th) night. Check out a behind the scenes journal the award show here and see a complete list of winners below.
