One Direction’s latest single “Little Things” shows a new side to the band. Gone are the familiar pop beats and sing along chorus. Instead, introspective and at times questionable lyrics are heard. A mature song for the band, the stripped down acoustic ballad was written by fellow British singer Ed Sheeran.
Earlier this year Ed spoke with MTV News and described the track as “a very sweet song.”
“It was written about the best things about someone, kind of like the things you wouldn’t expect,” he said.
It’s no secret that Ed wrote the song when he was 17-years-old for someone he knew but we have to wonder, why didn’t he keep it for himself?
One Direction released the video for “Little Things” on Friday. It shows the boys alone in the studio singing the lyrics and Liam, Louis and Niall strumming an acoustic guitar.
“I know you’ve never loved the crinkles by your eyes when you smile/ You’ve never loved your stomach or your thighs/ The dimples in your back at the bottom of your spine but I’ll love them endlessly,” Liam sings.
A song that details many insecurities girls suffer with, it’s an interesting direction for the band to go toward. In fact, Ed admitted one of these lyrics really stuck out to him.
“It’s got one of my favorite lines that I’ve ever written in a song,” he said. “Harry says, ‘I know you never like the sound of your voice on tape and you never like to know how much you weigh and you still have to squeeze into your jeans, but you’re perfect to me.’”
Another first for the band is the black and white video which compliments the stripped down track and poignant lyrics.
“You’ll never love yourself half as much as I love you/ You’ll never treat yourself right darlin’ but I want you to/ If I let you know I’m here for you maybe you’ll love yourself like I love you,” One Direction sing.
