With over 80,000 Twitter followers, over 500,000 likes on Facebook, and over 77 million YouTube views, sixteen-year-old San Antonio, Texas native Austin Mahone easily qualifies for the title of the “next big thing.”
Austin recently stopped by 102 JAMZ/Orlando and gave them a glimpse inside the life of a budding superstar.
Much like his musical inspiration Justin Bieber, Mahone got his start via the amazing power of YouTube. He created a channel with his friend Alex, and then branched out to his very own channel that features song covers.
Although his first single, “Say Somethin,” seems to be about frustration with girls, Mahone insists that isn’t the case. “No, not frustrated. Just sayin’, if you’re feeling the vibe, say somethin.”
An official video for “Say Somethin” is set to be shot next week and Austin hints at a beach setting. But who will be playing the “super hot, fire hot” beach babe referred to in the song’s lyrics? According to Austin the role is yet to be cast.
While there are plenty of girls dying to go on a date with Austin, he admits that he’s inexperienced in the field of dating. “My first date was kind of awkward. Because, like, it was kind of like a double date,” he said. “It was weird. I haven’t gone on many dates because, you know, just been moving a lot and doing my own thing.”
When it comes to the go to summer pop song for 2012, Austin is sticking with his very own “Say Somethin,” although he lists a variety of artists currently residing on his iPod. “I have a lot of Drake, I have a lot of Lil’ Wayne, 2 Chainz, JB, Ne-Yo, Dirty Mike and the Boys, Usher…just got his new album.” And his favorite song from Usher’s latest? “‘Climax.’ It’s such a good song. His falsetto just kills it.”
