Frank Ocean has come out of the closet with class and flair. The Odd Future affiliate took to his Tumblr to tell a story about the man who was his first true love. As the first member of the hip-hop community to publicly state he is gay, the singer set off online fireworks and earned the support from many, including Odd Future frontman Tyler, The Creator.
In a post entitled “Basedgod Was Right,” a reference to Lil B, Ocean offered a prelude to what was to come:
“we’re all a bunch of golden million dollar babies,” he wrote, “my hope is that the babies born these days will inherit less of the bullshit than we did. anyhow, what i’m about to post is for anyone who cares to read. it was intended to fill the thank you’s section in my album credits, but with all the rumors going round.. i figured it’d be good to clarify..”
Ocean outted himself after the U.K. blog ThisIsMax raised speculation about his sexuality based on love songs from the singer’s new album, in which he referenced a “he” as the object of his affection. The chatter inspired Ocean to post a story about his first gay love who did not reciprocate his feelings.
“4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost. And on the days we were together, time would glide. Most of the day I’d see him, and his smile. I’d hear his conversation and his silence … until it was time to sleep. Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless. There was no escaping, no negotiation with the feeling. No choice. It was my first love, it changed my life. Back then, my mind would wander to the women I had been with, the ones I cared for and thought I was in love with. I reminisced about the sentimental songs I enjoyed when I was a teenager … the ones I played when I experienced a girlfriend for the first time. I realized they were written in a language I did not yet speak.”
Tyler, The Creator, the Odd Future leader who refers to homosexuals as “f**gots” in his music, offered Ocean his support.
“My Big Brother Finally F***ing Did That,” Tyler tweeted. “Proud Of That N**** Cause I Know That S*** Is Difficult Or Whatever. Anyway. I’m A Toilet.”
