92.3 NOW's Micki Gamez

From Micki Gamez

I know it’s cool to be gay (insert humor here) but now it’s even more cool to be straight and support gay marriage! I applaud and thank each and every one of you for standing up for my community’s basic civil rights and for supporting my marriage.

I would like to especially thank Jay-Z who came out as a gay supporter yesterday! The Brooklyn rapper told CNN that he supports President Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage.

I love that Jay-Z stated that “I’ve always thought it as something that was holding the country back.” Right on! It means the world to me to hear someone as wealthy, influential and popular as Jay come forward and support one of the hottest political issues in America right now.

What I hope Jay’s endorsement creates is a conversation among our society where people really look at the basic issue gays and lesbians are fighting for in the United States. Marriage for my community isn’t about religion – it’s about basic civil government rights and the 1138 tax benefits that are given to legal married couples that we are denied every day.

What legal marriage for my partner and I means is that we will both have legal custody of our children. We will both be considered family and next of kin, God forbid that something catastrophic happened and that is something that means the most to us. Yes, we have the proper paperwork in place – in case of an emergency – but a lot of people in the gay community aren’t fully protected and don’t have the financial means to afford wills and other legal documents for medical power of attorney.

So, from the bottom of my heart, I want to thank our President, Vice President, Brangelina, Charlize Theron and other actors and musicians – and especially Jay-Z – for saying it’s okay to be gay and legally married in the greatest country of all!
