The internet and social media sites have been a buzz today with chatter about Time Magazine’s cover on their latest issue. Gracing the cover is 26-year-old stay at home mother of two, Jamie Lynne Grumet, who can be seen breastfeeding her 3-year-old son, Aram.

The headline asks the question, “Are You Mom Enough?” and covers the extremes mothers go to by utilizing “attachment parenting,” a technique pioneered by Dr. Bill Sears. Attachment parenting has three main tenants; extended breast-feeding, co-sleeping and “baby wearing,” where an infant is physically attached to their parents by a sling.

Opinion on the cover and attachment parenting is drawn down the middle; some believe breastfeeding a child that late in life is unsettling, while others think the decision is up to the parent.

My son made me a mom four years ago in April. My partner and I both breastfed him for two weeks but had to stop because we found out that he was severely allergic to soy and milk. He had to go on a special formula, “Liquid Gold” as we called it.

We were disappointed that we had to stop breastfeeding because, well I had the difficult task of doing lactation induction to produce milk three months leading up to his birth and my partner, being a PA, knew that breast milk was best. We had hoped to breastfeed our little bundle of joy until he was at least 12 months old.

I think that’s a good cut off point. I by no means judge other moms who breast feed longer or choose not to breast feed at all. To each his own, right? But when is enough actually enough? Should we judge this mom breast feeding her son who is almost four years old?

I gotta be honest, my first reaction was to shame the mom and think “WTF” is wrong with this woman? Shouldn’t you stop breasfeeding your child when he/she has teeth and is old enough and go potty on their own?!?!

I don’t know the real answer to that question. I guess you do what’s best for your family, right? Is this woman making a mistake? Agree to disagree?
