“Pretty” is exactly what [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Nicole Scherzinger[/lastfm] is. It’s hard to argue with her silky brunette locks and flawless complexion.

However, her song “Pretty,” which she debuted on The X Factor last night, is not pretty, albeit in all the best ways that make a pop star go from manufactured sounding to totally raw and real.

Here’s what we’ve noticed: Ever since the emergence of [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Adele[/lastfm] and perhaps Florence Welch, female artists have ostensibly “revived” gritty, heart-worn ballads.

With Nicole Scherzinger’s wide-ranging, bluesy voice, this new found sound is perfect.
