"Relatively Speaking" Broadway Opening Night - After Party

What do you get when you combine the amazing forces of Woody Allen, Ethan Coen and Elaine May? Three AMAZING short stories and one great night on the town. For this week’s super-charged Theater Thursday, not only do I have the deets on this new (amazing) Broadway play, I sat down to chat with the one and only MARGE SIMPSON (aka the lovely Julie Kavner who plays the voice of Marge) AND I have your free tickets to the show!

What are you waiting for?! Let’s go to Broadway!

Relatively Speaking is now on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theater and has everyone talking and something for everyone.

A Broadway play with a cast of 16 (this is HUGE for a non-musical), this play is the combination of three short stories by playwrights Woody Allen, Ethan Coen and Elaine May that all have the underlying theme of family. It’s the perfect show for someone with A.D.D.: the acts are short, it’s easy to follow and funny as hell. This ALL STAR cast includes legends like Marlo Thomas, Julie Kavner, Steve Guttenberg and Grant Shaud (you know him as Miles from Murphy Brown) that are all at the top of their game.

Earlier this week, I sat down with the LEGENDARY Julie Kavner to talk about the play, her history with The Simpsons and life in showbiz. While I couldn’t convince her to do the “Marge voice”, I think after two seconds you’ll know exactly who is on the phone.

Three completely different plays, one show. Here’s how it breaks down:

Show 1: “Talking Cure” by Ethan Coen (one half of the famous Coen Brothers)

Not my favorite. Thankfully this was the shortest of the three. I won’t go into much detail but will tell you this is the story of a psychiatric patient and his doctor. There are a few funny moments in this four person play.

Show 2: “George is Dead” by Elaine May

Marlo Thomas is absolutely brilliant is this story about her husband who passes unexpectedly from a tragic skiing accident. She stops by an old friend’s house unannounced and works through the tragedy of losing her husband. This funny (and sad) story shows how a wealthy woman who knows how to do nothing for herself learns to take on life without her husband.

Great story, brilliant cast, my second favorite play of the evening.

Show 3: “Honeymoon Motel” by Woody Allen

They definitely saved the best for last with this witty and hilarious play by the legendary Woody Allen. I really don’t want to give too much away but will tell you this act is a roller coaster of twists and turns. Several TONY-worthy performances in this show including Grant Shaud and Julie Kavner. Not only does Kavner give a brilliant performance, she is by far the funniest character of the night.

All in all, this was a great time at the theater and has something for everyone. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster.com… PLUS I was able to get a pair of tickets to give away to one lucky 92.3 NOW listener!
