Sleep No More NYC
Let me start off by saying Sleep No More is one of the most amazing productions I have ever experienced in my life. I’m trying to figure out the best way to put this experience into words, but it’s hard for words to describe this exhilarating experience. Whether you’re a Shakespeare fan or not, this is one mind-blowing, hands-on theatrical experience you can’t afford to miss.

We walked up to an abandoned building on the west side of Chelsea last week and waited in line not knowing what to expect. Once we entered the building, we were handed playing cards and proceeded to wait in a circa-1920′s hotel lobby with absinthe, a full bar and amazing live music while we waited to be taken into a hands-on world of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. We were handed our masks (yes, you must remain anonymous the entire time) and told the rules which were simple: Don’t talk. We were then loaded onto an elevator and dropped at various floors of this “hotel”.

Now, I’ll be the first to tell you that I knew very little about this story and have never read a Shakespeare anything so was a bit concerned that I would be lost the entire time. This wasn’t the case at all. You enter a world of another time and explore in silence while actors come in and out of the various rooms you are in. I want to make sure I properly explain how AMAZING this space was (I heard over $1 Million was put into renovating this space for this production). It’s five HUGE floors with the most amazing details I have ever seen. You explore every possible scene from Macbeth in a hands-on way. You can dig through desk drawers, eat candies in the candy shop, walk through a graveyard, stand in the ballroom and watch people dance and eat and basically experience the story firsthand. I’m sitting here trying to think of something like this I can reference but nothing comes to mind. The detail involved in this blew me away.
The other cool part about this show is that the actors come in and out and it is designed for you to create your own experience. You can follow one character the entire time, or walk around and follow multiple characters. It’s amazing and something you must experience for yourself. I’m not a big show-pusher but really, get tickets and go experience this for yourself.

I also heard a rumor that Gossip Girl recently shot an episode at Sleep No More, so if you’re a GG fan, keep your eyes peeled. I also have another friend that went that told me after he left when everyone was taking their masks off and leaving he discovered he was standing next to MADONNA! If this show is cool enough for Madonna, that means you should really check it out before it’s gone!
