Getting a call from a record label to remix one of their artists is always an honor, but getting a call saying “Slim wants you to do a remix” stops you dead in your tracks. Inevitably, my friend was talking about none other than Slim, the Owner/President/Head Honcho aka… Bossman of Cash Money Records!

They are most recently known for turning out mega-hit after mega-hit with artists such as [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lil Wayne[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Drake[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Nicki Minaj[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Kevin Rudolf[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Jay Sean[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Tyga[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Young Money[/lastfm] to name a few.

This would be no exception as it was going to be for none other than [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lil Wayne[/lastfm] and his explosive new single “How To Love.”

I knew we were going to be called to task as this record has been blowing up everywhere. Only thing is, the song had been a venture into new uncharted territory for Weezy almost as a soul baring down tempo ballad of sorts, so we really had our work cut out for us.

Nonetheless, I took it back to the Smash Mode studio where my remix partner Jimmy and I began to contemplate how to put our signature on it and retain it’s original integrity that made it so successful. So after spending a few nights with it we got into the zone and felt musically that it was something of a triumph for Lil Wayne and we wanted our remix to express that. Once we got some pianos going with an electro bassline, the rest kinda fell into place and a Smash Mode Remix was born! The only thing better than the original phone call to do the remix was the one where they said “Approved” after they heard it… That’s how we do!
