On Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince causing a serious loss of life and catastrophic destruction. This is the most powerful earthquake to hit the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation in the last 2 centuries.
Shoes 2 Share
Shoes 2 Share International was birthed in Haiti, where the Founders, Tim and Rhonda Wampler saw first hand the plight of the Haitian people, as they were going through an exceptionally lengthy and challenging process of completing their family with the adoption of their two youngest children.
Shoes 2 Share has initiated Operation “THERE” (“The Haitian Earthquake Relief Effort”). They are partnering with other relief agencies in providing aid and hope to those devastated by the earthquake.
Operation “THERE” is accepting donations of needed goods and supplies.
Financial contributions to purchase additional supplies and to help cover related operational costs are also being sought.
For more information on how you can be “THERE” to help a nation through this tragedy, please visit www.shoes2share.com or call (302) 993-1234.

OTHER WAYS YOU CAN HELP:
It’s becoming a little confusing for people to figure out where they should send charitable donations to the victims affected by the earthquake in Haiti. We’ve provided some information on what each organization is aiming to achieve and how you can make a difference:
The United Nations World Food Program is currently sending food assistance to the island and announced it will provide ten-million dollars in aid. The World Bank pledged 100-million dollars to the cause. UNICEF has promised to deploy “essential aid” while The American Red Cross is looking to fund 200-thousand in assistance to impacted communities. Direct Relief International has sent 420-thousand dollars worth of medicine, supplies and food to Port-au-Prince’s St. Damien Children’s Hospital.
If you or someone you know has family or loved ones in Haiti, call 1-888-407-4747.
FACTS:
Haiti is located between Cuba and Puerto Rico and shares an island with the Dominican Republic. Its current population is over nine-million people with 80 percent of its residents living in poverty. Haiti is one of poorest countries in the Western hemisphere.
————————–
MSNBC has put together this helpful list of charitable organizations rushing to Haiti’s aid, adding, “For those interested in helping immediately, simply text “HAITI” to “90999″ and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill.”
CELEBRITY RESPONSES:
Wycleff Jean Heads Home
When news first broke surrounding the unfortunate earthquake that hit Haiti, Wyclef Jean made sure he was on the first plane to help his homeland. MTV reached out to his former Fugees bandmate, Pras, to get an updated account on what exactly is going on in Haiti.
“Well the only details I can tell you is that over a hundred thousand people that are actually dead we know a couple of official are dead and that’s basically the only thing we know. And everything else is flat, because there’s no more communication going on in Haiti.”
“We have to do something, we have to help them and plus it’s the humane thing to do, it’s tragic. I man this is the worst, I mean look at it like this, in the last year and half, Haiti had four hurricanes and Haitians are very resilient, there like, ‘Ok let’s move on,’ but now, this earthquake, no one was prepared for it, it just happened.”
The emcee also explained how he responded to President Barack Obama’s immediate “aggressive, coordinated effort” to help Haiti and how everyone can help out.
Usher’s Statement:
“I am devastated by the news in Haiti and am calling for youth worldwide to support and offer assistance to the millions of people in that area that are in dire need. I am currently working with Usher’s New Look, my non-profit organization, to figure out the most effective means of help. I also know that young men and women have asked the same question- “How can I help?” With Haiti in a state of emergency right now, young people do have the power to save lives. I am asking young people of all ages to mobilize by organizing local fundraisers with the proceeds going to their peers in Haiti. This is one way we all can make a difference.”
Omarion’s Response:
With all the damage the earthquake that struck Haiti has caused, Omarion took to his Twitter account to urge people to help out – even if it means not buying his album. The former B2K lead singer wrote: “I’d rather you all take the time to donate to Haiti…get my album another time.” He then added he wants to organize a benefit concert and urges everyone to visit Care.org to help those in need.
Maxwell’s Statement:
“My heartfelt prayers go out to all my people of Haiti in the wake of this devastating earthquake. I was honored to attend an emergency meeting organized by President Bill Clinton on Thursday. It was pivotal to me, and even uplifting. I was in a room with all kinds of incredible people from all sorts of different backgrounds, all working on solutions – artists, financiers, disaster specialists and Haiti experts like Dr. Paul Farmer, the public health specialist who is a United Nations Deputy Special Envoy to Haiti. Everyone in the room was focused on solutions to Haiti’s urgent and mounting problems. Many ideas were discussed that are at this moment being put into action. While the immediate focus is on humanitarian aid and saving lives, the ultimate goal is to rebuild Haiti so that all Haitians can make their country a better place to live for all. I have volunteered to assist President Clinton in any way that I can.
The most important thing I learned was that sending cash is the best way to help right now. The easiest way to do it is through text messaging, but other ways to help include donating to organizations such as the Clinton Foundation, Unicef, Red Cross and Wyclef’s charity YeleHaiti.”
Lady GaGa Response:
While on Oprah’s couch, Gaga said she will be donating all the money from her January 24th concert in New York City to the relief effort in Haiti.
Madonna Responds:
Madonna has donated 250-thousand dollars to help Haiti – and she is urging her fans and friends to do the same. The pop queen released a statement last week saying that her prayers are with the people of Haiti. She says she donated to Partners In Health, a longtime health care provider there.
